We had a second meetup around Google I/O, focusing on all the relevant news and content presented at this conference.<br />
See <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1d4cQKuJ6zk1MvFaowfPAiq5ZOYRvrhDCbEosAl28skk/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">these slides</a> to get links to Google I/O talks, grouped by topic - from Android till TensorFlow.<br />
<br />
Then Emanuel gave us a more in-depth presentation about Android Things - see his <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/176S8LaEah_1KheWxgc_I_CJZcaQb_k6jmQZXwHEGCys/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">slides</a> with his hands-on experience with the kit from I/O 2017.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08941681025867511180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4196798569505770248.post-54221329249204254232017-05-18T10:15:00.000+02:002017-05-18T10:43:38.637+02:00Google I/O Extended 2017<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We were hosting again a Google I/O Extended this year. About 70 participants joined us in watching the event live with thousands of other developers worldwide.<br />
<br />
And more will be announced at I/O 2017. All of them we will cover in our next <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/240079506/" target="_blank">meeetup</a>!

<img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGwx0vYtk875zUADou-3rNcJbFf1JTgv4cMAN0wGOe3zopB9PBIIb7F5vFJGNMo8wTRa8WTN134a-Rhm5CBf4u5MByEkFWS1pGepAa1ZnNjZCkGSXhVjLqiaLiXiF80gZqR8q8oDBauo/s400/google-goes-serverless.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<br />
Cloud Next '17 had many great announcements, and one of them was that Google Cloud Functions are now in Open Beta.<br />
<br />
In a short overview <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1fXkWD1dFi-FQ-opM1xENsL0UxEmUWqkoRHAS12P_14o/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">presentation</a> we were discussing what Google Cloud Functions are, how they are invocated and their pricing.<br />
<br />
In addition to triggers like HTTP or Google Pub/Sub, there is also the possibility to link them to Firebase. In the second presentation <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/members/183469555/" target="_blank">László</a> - a member of GDG Vienna but also organizer of <a href="https://www.meetup.com/Serverless-Vienna" target="_blank">Serverless Vienna meetup group</a> - <a href="https://serverless-vienna.github.io/2017/Meetup20170426/FirebaseCommentsShowcase/index.html" target="_blank">showcased</a> using Cloud Functions together with Firebase, including a review of the developer experience.<br />
<br />
And finally <a href="https://twitter.com/nikgraf" target="_blank">Nik Graf</a> talked about the big picture in <a href="https://www.slideshare.net/nikgraf/introduction-to-serverless" target="_blank">his presentation</a>: what is serverless, what offerings exist from Amazon in comparison, and how does the "Serverless Framework" help to abstract the differences in the vendor-specific configuration.<br />
<br />
Interested in more about Google Cloud? This blog post here has listed the most important news: <a href="https://blog.google/topics/google-cloud/100-announcements-google-cloud-next-17/" target="_blank">100 announcements (!) from Google Cloud Next '17</a><br />
And if you wanted to try out some stuff, there are two good news. First, the free trial period for Google Cloud has been extended to 12 month from previously 3 months. And, there is a new set of tutorials available which always include free cloud usage for them: <a href="https://google.qwiklabs.com/" target="_blank">Qwiklabs Tutorials</a><br />
<br />
<b><em>Our next events:</em></b> Serverless Vienna will have another <a href="https://www.meetup.com/Serverless-Vienna/events/239550229/" target="_blank">coding session</a> on 10 May 2017 at Stockwerk, then there is a <a href="https://www.meetup.com/microservices-vienna/events/239004291/" target="_blank">Serverless and Microservices</a> discussion panel on 15 May, and last not least <i>...<br /> ... <br /> drumroll <br />...</i><br />

We were meeting for a <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/237188707/" target="_blank">viewing party</a> of the keynote and the first couple of sessions from the <a href="https://events.withgoogle.com/tensorflow-dev-summit" target="_blank">TensorFlow Dev Summit 2017</a>.<br />
A mixed audience, some already working with TensorFlow and others more interested in it, we learned about the <a href="https://developers.googleblog.com/2017/02/announcing-tensorflow-10.html" target="_blank">release of TensorFlow 1.0</a>, including the <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">tf.keras</span> module, offering compatibility with <a href="https://keras.io/" target="_blank">Keras</a>, another popular high-level neural networks library.<br />

And our next meetups are already planned:<br />
On 9 March we have another viewing party (<a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/237042226/" target="_blank">Next '17 Extended - Vienna</a>), this time it's all about Google Cloud.<br />

And of course as every year we will have a <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/237174401/" target="_blank">Google I/O Extended Vienna</a>, this time on 17 May.<br />
<br /></div>

<br />
Our <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/236232894/" target="_blank">first meetup in 2017</a> was again in the Google office in Vienna. A big Thank You to Google for the room, drinks & snacks!<br />
<br />
We started with a "<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1I6JTyXp93dp0TEUJhaXtkd9FyZnGX_6QkoF9HodQ93s" target="_blank">What's New at Google</a>" slideshow - a collection of developer related stuff recently announced or made available by Google. <a href="https://developer.android.com/things/index.html" target="_blank">Android Things</a>, <a href="http://news.dartlang.org/2016/12/enhancing-flutter-developer-experience.html" target="_blank">Flutter developer experience</a>, <a href="https://opensource.googleblog.com/2017/01/grumpy-go-running-python.html" target="_blank">Grumpy</a> and more stuff have been mentioned there.<br />
<br />
In the <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1EYEG9FJDjt7zaYpwJlNgiFfUaoF0VIa12tBzfeEpMzM" target="_blank">main presentation</a> we were talking about developing with API.AI as well as using the Actions SDK, including a live demonstration of the agend on Google Home.<br />
<br />
And then we were talking about our plans for the future. We will have a <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/237042226/" target="_blank">Next '17 Extended - Vienna</a> event on 9 March, a <a href="http://www.womentechmakers.at/" target="_blank">Women Techmakers Vienna</a> event on 11 March, and <a href="https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Vienna/events/237174401/" target="_blank">Google I/O Extended Vienna</a> on 17 May.<br />

<i>This is a joint meetup with <a href="http://meetup.com/AndroidHeads" target="_blank">AndroidHeads Vienna</a>.</i><br />
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
This time we had Doug Sillars as a guest. He is a developer advocate at AT&T and the author of the book “<a href="http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920035053.do" target="_blank">High Performance Android Apps</a>”, published by O’Reilly in September of this year. You can find a few decks that he has presented at <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/dougsillars/">http://www.slideshare.net/dougsillars/</a></div>
<div>
The event was sponsored by <a href="https://pspdfkit.com/" target="_blank">PSPDFKit GmbH</a> - they provided the location, pizza and drinks. Word is they are also <a href="https://pspdfkit.com/jobs/" target="_blank">looking for developers</a> to hire ;)<br />
<br />
We also mentioned this year's <a href="http://www.devfest.at/" target="_blank">DevFest Vienna</a> which is coming on 21 November 2015. Registration is not yet open but should open really soon now!<br />

<i>It is this time of the year again!</i><br />
<br />
Google I/O is every year the most important developer conference for everyone dealing with Google Technology: be it Android, Google Cloud offerings, or one of the many Google APIs.<br />
<br />
If you cannot attend Google I/O live in San Francisco, then Google I/O Extended is the best way for you to follow the news and to connect with other interested developers.<br />
Part viewing party and part community building, Google I/O Extended is a free event focused on the live stream of Google I/O.<br />
<br />
We will provide pizza, drinks & popcorn at our Google I/O Extended event in Vienna <a href="http://www.stockwerk.co.at/" target="_blank">@Stockwerk</a>. As much as possible, Google+ hangouts will allow you to enter in direct conversation with the developers in San Francisco.<br />

The year 2013 was a really amazing year for us at GDG Vienna. We had a lot of events and meet-ups, alongside with hackathons and cooperation with many companies and user groups.<br />
<ul>
<li>We started in <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/c4p44i184kjvnf8l718gk76ftp8" target="_blank">January</a> with an "Introduction to Ingress” held by <a href="https://plus.google.com/102416582496795572853" target="_blank">Anna Kastlunger</a> and a nice tech talk from <a href="https://plus.google.com/+SergiiKauk" target="_blank">Sergii Kauk</a> on Google APIs. Followed by <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cunj0jj3hcvnnv2bt2lbmorof8g" target="_blank">February</a> with a tech talk from <a href="https://plus.google.com/+GerwinSturm" target="_blank">Gerwin Sturm</a> on Google Cloud Endpoints. It was again <a href="https://plus.google.com/+GerwinSturm" target="_blank">Gerwin Sturm</a> who gave in <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/c5tapucfrmq817v0q3gas79nqok" target="_blank">March</a> a talk about Google Glass and the mirror API. <a href="https://plus.google.com/+NikGraf" target="_blank">Nik Graf</a> from <a href="http://blossom.io/">blossom.io</a> reported on his experiences with Dart. And we welcomed <a href="https://plus.google.com/+AygulZagidullina" target="_blank">Aygul Zagidullina</a> on hangouts who shared with us some Google Glass experience.</li>
<li>We organized also an <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cug3fnq72je5rsh36otuo7b9ab4" target="_blank">AR Drone Hackathon</a> where <a href="https://plus.google.com/+KariemHussein" target="_blank">Kariem Hussein</a>, <a href="https://plus.google.com/116915067443610453109" target="_blank">Timea Turdean</a> and <a href="https://plus.google.com/+MarcEdem" target="_blank">Marc Edem</a> formed a team that worked on controlling the drone with gestures recognized via a webcam, and <a href="https://plus.google.com/+GerwinSturm" target="_blank">Gerwin Sturm</a>, <a href="https://plus.google.com/102416582496795572853" target="_blank">Anna Kastlunger</a>, and <a href="https://plus.google.com/116588768423741846297" target="_blank">Shadi Abani</a> worked in their team with the navigation data provided by the drone to give some visual feedback about orientation, altitude and battery state inside of the Chrome App.</li>
<li>We organized the <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cg8ec38cnac0roslduf29vcsb9c" target="_blank">Google I/O Extended</a> viewing which was one of our greatest event with an attendance of almost 100 people. As in previous years we met in a nice place in Vienna to watch the announcements made at this year's Google I/O - this year it was The Hub. Some of the organizers were in San Francisco and provided us with nice pictures and live reports from there as well!</li>
<li>In <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/c53rpha4gm3rqtbpkdfv1f3kres" target="_blank">June</a> we had another Google Glass experience with <a href="https://plus.google.com/+SergiiKauk" target="_blank">Sergii Kauk</a> and a session on “Responsive Design with GWT” by <a href="https://plus.google.com/116915067443610453109" target="_blank">Timea Turdean</a>. The <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cqq305nc2vmkaj3l95vugtn7roo" target="_blank">August meetup</a> with the “Introduction to Graph database” by <a href="https://plus.google.com/+MarcEdem" target="_blank">Marc Edem</a> was also an amazing session.</li>
<li>The next big event: <a href="http://www.devfest.at/" target="_blank">DevFest Vienna!</a> It was a great 3 days events. In cooperation with the <a href="http://jsug.at/" target="_blank">Java Student User Group</a> and the <a href="http://meetup.com/AndroidHeads" target="_blank">AndroidHeads Vienna</a> we have organized an amazing festivity for developers in mobile, cloud, social & web, including an awesome after-party powered by <a href="http://www.cenarion.com/" target="_blank">Cenarion</a> - made possible by the support of <a href="http://www.willhaben.at/" target="_blank">Willhaben</a>, <a href="http://www.paypal.at/" target="_blank">PayPal</a> and Google. Other sponsors were <a href="http://indoo.rs/" target="_blank">Indoors</a>, <a href="http://www.tailored-apps.com/" target="_blank">Tailored Apps</a>, <a href="http://codiqa.com/" target="_blank">Codiqa</a>, <a href="http://www.oreilly.de/" target="_blank">O'Reilly</a> and <a href="http://manning.com/" target="_blank">Manning Publication</a>. We had the chance to have great speakers and presenters together with time for networking and relaxing. The <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cnd7c65785b133o035td1lkqess" target="_blank">hackathon</a> on Sunday was also a great success where gifted developers created great applications.</li>
<li>We ended the year with the <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cac1tm3e4ljo9fvsrqc4ab2u4o8" target="_blank">Android Native on Intel</a> - a joint event with AndroidHeads Vienna sponsored by Intel, with <a href="https://plus.google.com/+MarcEdem" target="_blank">Marc Edem</a> presenting on Intel optimizations for Android and <a href="https://plus.google.com/+KariemHussein" target="_blank">Kariem Hussein</a> talking about Cloud Endpoints in Java Google App Engine.</li>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg23CwuKNrBtPgqk9v4wDEOfhyphenhyphenqJyt1nt0eE6mXX9z70R5OYzh3JKC2y8cTT227bXCwxnVcRiojNUUsRXuHrueFIsgTT-ZQSnQ5SxHvx1BWCPjjII1hFAvGz5jE1FMZzPX2H4xK2FWWCt1D/s1600/20130926_201229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg23CwuKNrBtPgqk9v4wDEOfhyphenhyphenqJyt1nt0eE6mXX9z70R5OYzh3JKC2y8cTT227bXCwxnVcRiojNUUsRXuHrueFIsgTT-ZQSnQ5SxHvx1BWCPjjII1hFAvGz5jE1FMZzPX2H4xK2FWWCt1D/s320/20130926_201229.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Based on a NoSQL thechnology like Google Big Tables, or Dynamo of Amazon, Graph database has a pure advantage toward common relational database which is its time performance and the speed of execution of queries on really big data.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmsDucqmrpExtJAeXVK7C22HuYgX89mBaikjBp-cjJMfS6zVpT30eafcfbQPfrZkoX8dtTvj1tt1okvvPOA5CJr493eY4Iz91vLQMQ0daaQxXljUlbN6l6b0X-Lnp9wZ6W9eQ4yH_2ddzv/s1600/IMG_20130926_191601.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmsDucqmrpExtJAeXVK7C22HuYgX89mBaikjBp-cjJMfS6zVpT30eafcfbQPfrZkoX8dtTvj1tt1okvvPOA5CJr493eY4Iz91vLQMQ0daaQxXljUlbN6l6b0X-Lnp9wZ6W9eQ4yH_2ddzv/s320/IMG_20130926_191601.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
An example is where normal relational database query can take up to 2000 ms to execute, graph database need only 2ms which is extremely fast compared to the relational databse.<br />

<br />
First <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/116915067443610453109" target="_blank">+Timea Turdean</a> presented an amazing demo on how to use responsive design features on the GWT, and specially how it looks ans feel on a mobile device, based on a real example she had done at her work place.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFUoQgXaKX4oR99PL_TTIyNk_hrX6wG8nSFNlP_l9X9QsN5GsyJbDbN_MxIs7I8f8S1laELtjiUXV64pDEOL5vLgQaGBoUoOUSCEMFg-CSZIgTczPFZCxcLksM002S3JyL7H0BBF2TxwEb/s1600/20130627_203922.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFUoQgXaKX4oR99PL_TTIyNk_hrX6wG8nSFNlP_l9X9QsN5GsyJbDbN_MxIs7I8f8S1laELtjiUXV64pDEOL5vLgQaGBoUoOUSCEMFg-CSZIgTczPFZCxcLksM002S3JyL7H0BBF2TxwEb/s320/20130627_203922.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After that session, <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/106401792982259937659" target="_blank">+Sergii Kauk</a> presented to us a live demo of developing an application for the Google Glass <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/109843974162798430473" target="_blank">+GoogleGlassUA</a> . And of course we had the chance to try out the Google glass as well. Which was very interesting .<br />

As the last two years we met in a nice place in Vienna to watch the announcements made at this year's Google I/O.<br />
Some of the organizers were in San Francisco and provided us nice pictures from there as well!<br />

<br />
<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/101697775213251991950" target="_blank">Aygul Zagidullina</a> shared the experience of wearing <a href="http://www.google.com/glass" target="_blank">Google Glass</a> with us by joining in via hangout. The glasses are extremely light, to a point that you actually think you lost them. The battery life is only two hours when the screen is on; however, through good battery and energy management it manages to run for a full day of regular use. The font size is rather small, developers should be careful not to send too many notifications to the device as otherwise it will get very noisy.<br />
<br />
<i>Thanks Aygul for taking your time to share it with you and answer our questions! This report from your first-hand experience was great.</i><br />
<br />
Our next meetup is <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cg8ec38cnac0roslduf29vcsb9c" target="_blank">Google I/O Extended</a>!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08941681025867511180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4196798569505770248.post-68259494176367365262013-04-15T16:30:00.000+02:002013-04-15T16:30:37.704+02:00AR.Drone Hackathon<br />
On Saturday, April 13th a small group of people met up in <a href="https://metalab.at/">Metalab</a> for a hackathon centered around the AR.Drone based on a <a href="https://github.com/GoogleChrome/chrome-app-samples/blob/master/parrot-ar-drone">Chrome App project</a> (while other people preferred to spend the nice weather outside).<br />
<br />

<br />
While we didn't have many participants we still managed to get two groups working on quite different projects.<br />
<br />
<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/117897956157296937864" target="_blank">+Kariem Hussein</a>, <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/103252266779019064992" target="_blank">+Marc Edem</a> and <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/116915067443610453109" target="_blank">+Turdean Timea</a> worked on controlling the drone with gestures recognized via a webcam. (<a href="https://github.com/theRealImy/chrome-app-samples/tree/master/parrot-ar-drone">Source code</a>)<br />
<br />
<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/102416582496795572853" target="_blank">+Anna Kastlunger</a>, <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/112336147904981294875" target="_blank">+Gerwin Sturm</a> and <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105577829019726596584" target="_blank">+Shadi Abanni</a> first started off trying to get the video stream working which turned out more troublesome than expected. They then changed plans and worked with the navigation data provided by the drone to give some visual feedback about orientation, altitude and battery state inside of the Chrome App. (<a href="https://github.com/Scarygami/chrome-app-samples/tree/master/parrot-ar-drone">Source code</a>)<br />
<br />
Most importantly we had lots of fun trying not to crash the Drone too often :)<br />
<br />

<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/117897956157296937864" target="_blank">Kariem Hussein</a> gave a summary on the upcoming events of GDG Vienna. On Saturday, 13 April we will have a dedicated <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cug3fnq72je5rsh36otuo7b9ab4" target="_blank">AR Drone Hackathon</a>, later in May <a href="https://plus.google.com/events/cg8ec38cnac0roslduf29vcsb9c" target="_blank">Google I/O Extended</a>, and our AppEngine hackathon will now be on 15 June.<br />
<br />
<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/112336147904981294875" target="_blank">Gerwin Sturm</a> talked about Google Glasses and the Mirror API. Google Glasses will be programmed through the cloud, using a REST-based API. The original expectations that applications might be written directly running on Google Glasses seem not to come true. See <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XgYDbWNKEDLfm-F44sZy0uSOQKton5ksg5pWdv9XCo0/edit" target="_blank">this summary paper</a> for more details!<br />
<br />
<a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/107329962638892725242" target="_blank">Nik Graf</a> from <a href="http://blossom.io/" target="_blank">blossom io</a> offered us insight into the usage of <a href="http://www.dartlang.org/" target="_blank">Dart</a> at their product. More can also be read on the <a href="http://www.ramen.io/post/46936028144/we-are-switching-to-dart-why" target="_blank">post</a> from <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/113104647883788326011" target="_blank">Thomas Schranz</a>.<br />
<br />
Thanks to all who were coming! It was a very nice atmosphere again.<br />
